ATSC Grant Training

UAMS Dr. Elaine Wooten makes a point that grant proposals must be evidence based at an Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission (ATSC) Community Grants Workshop at the UAMS College of Public Health recently.  Representatives from Tobacco Free Marion County joined public health advocates from around the state in Little Rock for a briefing on ATSC requests for grant proposals. Examples from TFMC’s 2008 Youth Media Commitment proposal were used as teaching tools for the training.  TFMC’s grant was funded from over $2.5 million in requests for a share of only $500,000.

“Tobacco prevention has to be effective,” notes TFMC media coordinator J.R. Few.   “We’re challenging an industry with no shame and a limitless budget for manipulating public opinion and the public health.”

The Arkansas Tobacco Settlement Commission oversees funds voters mandated as part of the Tobacco Settlement Proceeds Act of 2000.
